On Saturday April 28th, the Folsom Cordova Unified School District attended Rancho Cordova’s 23rd Annual Kids Day at the Park held at Hagan Park. “Kids Day” is a festival for parents and young children in the community. Kids are treated to a day filled with fun, games, entertainment, prizes, and food while parents are offered free health resources and information. This year’s theme was “Water, Water, Everywhere” which focused the festivities on the topic of water safety, health, and conservation. Numerous organizations sponsored the event and came out to the festival to provide information and activities for kids.
This event has been incredibly beneficial for the community and has drawn a lot of attention, specifically because of the health care services it offers to families. As of last year, California had 6.9 million uninsured citizens—the highest in the nation—and that number has steadily been climbing since.
This year was the first year Folsom Cordova Unified School District has attended “Kids Day” and they made waves with a number of games, activities, and valuable resources. Among many things, kids could make water color paintings, go fishing for toys, create their own jumping frog, and play a ping-pong ball toss game for a free fitted life-jacket. While the kids had fun and were most excited about the games, parents were glad to see that they were also offered free eye exams and safety ID cards, as well as information on things such as low-cost internet, the district’s Ambassador Program, health facts for children, and how to enroll in school. AmeriCorps*VISTAS’ Parent Resource Outreach Mobile (P.R.O.M.) was also there offering information on free and low-cost medical care, parenting tips, employment resources, and district childcare resources.
In addition to the FCUSD booths, the festival also had a magic show, a free swim, a petting zoo, and a number of other booths led by organizations like the Rancho Cordova Rotary Club, SMUD, Kaiser Permanente, and the Golden State Water Company.
The turnout for the 23rd Annual Kids Day at the Park was impressive. Huge crowds were in attendance—lining up for games, receiving free check-ups, and having a great time. This event was a great success and is one that The Folsom Cordova Unified School District will certainly continue to attend.
