Cash For College Workshop
January 27, 2014
Cordova High Schools counseling department along with Cal Soap sponsored a Cash for College Workshop. This workshop was meant to aid students on their journey to college.
Seniors and their families were invited to attend the Cash for College Workshop to receive assistance filling out and completing their Financial Aid, Dream Act and Cal Grant applications. Over 100 people showed up from various school districts to participate in this workshop.
Senior Lorenzo Bermudez said, “I’m really grateful that my high school hosted this event. It was a lot easier and faster having professionals there who could help me if I had any questions about the forms.”
Assemblyman Ken Cooley set up a booth outside the computer lab. Cooley is a very strong advocate of education and had college and financial aid information set up for parents.
Cal Soap is a group that helps aid high school students by offering them assistance with financial aid forms and helps prepare students for college. Cal Soap mentors helped anyone that had questions and made sure that all the forms were filled out correctly. After the forms were submitted, students took a survey about the workshop which automatically entered them in to win a $1,000 scholarship.
Kristin Martin, a parent from outside of the FCUSD district, said “I was very surprised when I heard about this event through a friend of mine. The school that my son attends doesn’t have anything like this set up. I think it’s very generous and caring of Folsom Cordova Unified School District to aid parents and students who need assistance filling out forms and offering the resources necessary to complete the applications.”
One lucky student will receive the scholarship and be that much closer to achieving their dreams.
