To fundraise, students pledged money to walk around the pond near Folsom High School. Walk for Water event raises money for those who don’t have access to clean water, the money is given to Water for South Sudan, an organization that drills fresh water wells in South Sudan.
According to the official website for Water for South Sudan “Without safe water, millions of South Sudanese must trek miles every day to collect water from ponds, marshes, ditches or hand-dug wells. This water is often contaminated with parasites and disease-bearing bacteria. The results are sickness, even death,”
With freshwater wells nearby, sanitary water would improve health and make time for Sudanese girls to attend school rather than spending their days walking for water.
When asked his biggest concern, junior Connor Brandenburg says, "The greatest issue to me is that the next generation of Sudanese sees the struggles of the walk for water as normal; that's what we are here to fix—to change that norm."
GPS focuses on global issues to expand the global perspective of students. Through this event, Walk for Water gives students the chance to make a difference in South Sudan regardless of the distance in between.
“Just how many people turned up and how we help Sudan in the end is what excites me the most,” says Abhi Tangella, GPS Historian.
Kim adds, “I am most proud of the students taking action of their passions and breaking social cliques to come together for this event.”
