Emerge Folsom High Students Promote Sustainable Energy
May 25, 2014
Efforts to Maximize Education Reaching Generation Evermore [EMERGE], a student-led organization of Folsom High, set up an energy fair to raise awareness and educate students about sustainable energy.
Three Folsom High students established EMERGE to impact the next generation and to educate the next generation on sustainable energy. Senior Rachel Lucas, EMERGE Project Team Leader, said their group entered the scholarship competition Youth Energy Summit hosted by SMUD, and the Energy Fair was hosted to integrate creativity into making a sustainable future.
The event featured art work from elementary students, trivia questions, a photo booth, and booths manned by CaIso and SMUD. During lunch, students gained knowledge and awareness about a sustainable energy future by passing through all the booths where their questions about sustainable energy were answered by SMUD and CaIso representatives.
When asked what the most interesting part of the fair was, Junior Jessica Torres said she was surprised that SMUD is owned by Folsom residents and that half of the energy consumed is used for heat and electricity. Katie Rudnick also learned about the process of how energy comes to our homes.
The event was very successful, and students were able to learn about the phenomenon of energy. Lucas said, “I enjoyed integrating creativity, entertainment, and energy through elementary students, high school students, and our community.”
