Kings Take Over P.E. At Cordova High
February 21, 2014
The Sacramento Kings, Kaiser Permanente and the Physical Education and Student Government classes at Cordova High School teamed up to host a “PE Takeover Day” for the students that are going to be participating in the state fitness exams.
Sacramento Kings Arena hosts Jenn Santich and Scott Freshour taught P.E. classes for a day in an effort to motivate students to adopt healthy habits and perform better on their fitness exams.
“It’s great for us to try and promote a healthy image.” said Santich.
Santich and Freshour introduced the students to fun and unique forms of exercise by setting up dance, cross fit, and basketball stations. Students divided up into three different groups and spent 10-15 minutes at each station performing various activities before rotating to the next station.
“It’s a great experience for the kids because it’s exciting to be physically active and it’s important to find something that you love to do,” said Freshour.
The students enjoyed themselves and learned fun and unique ways of staying fit. They were exposed to positive participation in the community, athletics and classes and motivated to maintain a healthy life style.
Eddie Galom, a freshman at CHS, said, “This is very fun because it’s different. We mostly run every day but we’re getting more exercise by doing this. It makes me want to be more active and motivates me to do better on state testing.”
This event will ultimately help increase motivation in high school students to incorporate fitness into their daily lives.
CHS soccer coach and P.E. teacher Mr. McCahon said, “It’s been a good example, and the kids have had a lot of fun and have been engaged. They really seem to be enjoying it.”

On April 1st, Freshour and Santich will be back to put on a rally for the students as a reward for their efforts and performance on their state fitness exams. Kings cheerleaders and Slamson the Lion will also be there to dance and give away prizes.
